Course Description

The SRT 72 is a scenic ultra-distance journey along the Great Southern Rail Trail, taking runners from coast to country through the heart of South Gippsland.

Not quite ready to take on the full distance? Rally a team of up to four and tackle the course as a relay.

Starting in Port Welshpool and finishing in Leongatha, the course follows the same smooth, well-maintained rail trail corridor as the 100KM events. Runners move through scenic countryside, rolling farmland and a series of charming rail towns, with heritage stations, bridges and trail markers providing a constant connection to the region’s railway past.

With gentle gradients and long, uninterrupted sections of runnable trail, the 72km is built for flow, rhythm and endurance rather than technical difficulty. It’s an ideal stepping stone for runners or teams progressing into ultra distances, while still offering experienced athletes a fast, course where smart pacing and consistency are rewarded.

Simple, scenic and deeply satisfying, the SRT 72 delivers everything that makes rail trail running special.
